Security Overview
Campus Security at SI offers a variety of services to ensure the safety and security of our SI community. Director of Security Mike Dixon manages the program, which includes physical security, emergency preparedness/response, and community relations. The security landscape is always changing. Here at SI, we have created a security program to evolve with it.
Our physical security program components include 24/7/365 security agents, an electronic door access control system, digital check-in registration, intrusion alarm monitoring, a parent and faculty emergency notifications application, and IP CCTV digital video management system. These systems provide the school the ability to provide active around the clock security patrols and services, schedule door openings and closing, enact a global lockdown in the event of a critical incident, notify us of forced entries, and enable emergency messaging.
Campus Security manages the digital visitor check-in system, all traffic and parking procedures, and security event management. When checking in, parent names must match the current school parent directory and all visitors are screened through the National Sex Offender Registry. Failed background checks are immediately rectified before allowing persons on campus.
A team of security agents patrol the campus 24/7/365 to assist with any problem that might arise, help students find lost items, manage access for all deliveries, and control the daily opening and securing of the campus. Guards also assist co-curricular activities and events by providing access, directing guests to designated venues, and contacting emergency services in the event of an accident or injury.
Emergency preparedness involves annual presentations to the student body and faculty on emergency protocols that include discussion of the four main directives of “Secure, LockDown, Shelter-in-Place, and Evacuate." In 2014, SI was the first San Francisco Catholic high school to implement the Standard Response Protocols used by the San Francisco Police Department at all San Francisco public schools for response and recovery to critical incidents. Each classroom and office has a fully stocked first aid kit and supplies backpack.
Community relations includes working with SI leadership in the Good Neighbor program to provide quick responses to parking and traffic complaints. We continue to work with neighbors in submitting SFMTA traffic calming requests, such as speed bumps, traffic control signage, and parking.
Campus Access
All visitors to campus, including parents or guardians, are required during school hours to enter campus through the main entrance. At the main reception desk all visitors must sign in using their driver’s license, passport, or other government-issued identification. This identification must be presented every 90 days. A visitor badge will be issued and shall be worn visible on the outer upper clothing in order for our students to recognize who the known, trusted adults are on campus.
Bringing Items to Students: Forgotten items such as lunches, iPads, uniforms, etc. may be left with security at the main entrance. Items are to be logged in at security desk and will be signed out upon student retrieving the item.
Leaving Campus: In the event of an emergency, it is imperative that all students be accounted for by taking attendance. No student is allowed off campus at any time during the normal school hours without the permission of the Deans' Office. Once students arrive at school they are to remain on campus until the end of their last class period. The deans will issue a date/time stamped pass to present to security or faculty if leaving before the start of Lower Lunch. Students accompanied by faculty are permitted to go to or return from a community service project, field trip, or off-campus athletic event in which they are participants without the need of a pass. Students are not allowed to order takeout deliveries to campus, in order to manage who has access to the campus.
