After a brief battle with cancer, Edward A. Reese, S.J. went home to God on Aug. 2, 2025, among his brother Jesuits at the Sacred Heart Center in Los Gatos. Fr. Reese was 82 years old.

Few, if any, Jesuits have had a greater impact on Jesuit secondary education in the Jesuits West Province over the past 60 years. After serving as an Assistant Principal for Student Affairs at his alma mater, Loyola High School in Los Angeles, in the late 1970s, Eddie became the Principal of Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose for 13 years, where he pioneered the use of computers in the heart of Silicon Valley. After spending three years at St. Ignatius in Sydney, Australia, he returned as President of Brophy College Preparatory, where he transformed Brophy into one of the preeminent Jesuit high schools in the country by introducing 1:1 laptop instruction, opening the Loyola Academy--a tuition-free middle school for underserved students--and more than doubling the size of the campus.

In 2016, he became the 31st President of St. Ignatius College Preparatory, where he had an outsized impact in just nine years as president. He opened the Fr. Sauer Academy in 2016, significantly increased the school’s scholarship endowment fund, and envisioned the New Learning Commons, currently under construction. Generations of Ignatians yet to be born will benefit from this man’s vision and drive.

In his over 60 years as a Jesuit, Eddie impacted the lives of tens of thousands of young men and women. He marveled at God’s creation, introducing fish tanks and dogs wherever he went. He often quipped that “if you're not having fun, then what are you doing?”
